Rome Day Three

So obviously this photo snuck in with the ones from the third day, but it was from the second day... we ate enough gelato, you can pardon me for not being able to tell the days apart...
Here we are on Day Three at the angel castle.  It was built as a tomb for some Roman emperor (Nero?) by his successor (the emperor was gay and his chosen successor built the tomb for him).  Anyway, then the popes came along and due to its proximity to the Vatican they kind of appropriated it.  They built a bridge to it from the Vatican.  It has a pretty neat history, actually, with several Popes fleeing during danger and some living there for years.
Okay these trees are all over in Italy and I LOVE them.  They are like a gazillion feet tall and they're awesome!!
Here's the dungeon down on the basement level.  SUCH high ceilings!
This was a model bernini used before carving the fountain.
 The view from the top.
The angel at the tippy top of the castle.
My strapping and devilishly handsome husband.

The boys humored me (Whitney under serious duress) but we all posed in an empty alcove as statues.  Fun!

The restaurant in the angel castle.
Here we are at the market.  It was cool!  I bought some great parmesan cheese that I then forgot in the hotel.
Loved this entryway.  Whit wasn't in a photo taking mood.  So I got it, and then Brian.

This was our PERFECT gelato place.  Two kinds of watermelon.  The best of everything--canteloupe, honeydew melon.  Oh it was DIVINE.
Here we are at the piazza of St. Peter's square.
A view of the Vatican through the columns with backlight.  I'm loving the backlight.
Another spring, but it's from below the Vatican, so it's HOLY, right? ;)
Our last pizza before coming home.
